Multiphase extraction (MPE)
The MPE technique consists on simultaneously removing of free phase, dissolved phase, and soil vapors favoring air circulation in the unsaturated zone and in the capillary fringe. This effect is reached with the use of vertical pumping wells installed in predetermined places, considering the areas contaminated with hydrocarbons in forms of free phase, dissolved phase, and adsorbed phase. Groundwater contamination is therefore treated along with the contamination of the unsaturated soil zone.
